Tyler leads the firm’s Appellate Practice and co-leads the firm’s General Litigation Practice, which provide high-level approaches to clients’ most complex challenges.

An accomplished litigator, strategic advisor, and one of Wyoming’s most respected attorneys. He represents clients through their most complex legal and business challenges. Whether the case involves highly intellectual appellate issues or strategic decisions in the trenches of trial work, clients turn to Tyler for his ability to advance and defend their interests in complicated circumstances.

Tyler’s appellate practice provides focused representation before courts that will be making the final decision in a case. His command of appeals, especially before the Wyoming Supreme Court and the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit, is consistently sought by his clients as well as other attorneys seeking to team-up with skilled appellate counsel.

Tyler served as a staff attorney to Justice Michael K. Davis and Justice Barton R. Voigt of the Wyoming Supreme Court for four years, drafting over fifty opinions during his tenure. Before that, he served as a law clerk to Judge Terrence L. O’Brien of the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit. Tyler’s publication on appeals is regularly relied upon in Wyoming Supreme Court opinions and cited throughout the Wyoming Rules of Appellate Procedure.

Having previously practiced at several of the largest and most prestigious national law firms in the United States, Tyler brings a unique skill set to Wyoming that is unmatched and contributes to Hathaway & Kunz, a leading Wyoming law firm.

Tyler has also been an adjunct law professor and legal scholar. He was a professor of legal writing at the University of Wyoming College of Law, a testament to his intellectuality as well as his ability to fuel the forward thinking of next generation legal minds. He is also a Pegasus Scholar, being one of two attorneys selected each year for a Fellowship in the United Kingdom to study the English legal system.

Tyler also serves as Special Bar Counsel to the Wyoming State Bar, whereby he is tasked with investigating and prosecuting other Wyoming attorneys who may have violated the Rules of Professional Conduct for Attorneys at Law. Considering his accomplishments, Tyler has been recognized by Super Lawyers Magazine as a premier Wyoming attorney.

The Hathaway & Kunz appellate team consistently wins high-stakes victories for clients before federal and state courts of appeal, as well as handles complex litigation and dispositive motions in the lower courts and before regulatory agencies.

Team members have clerked for Wyoming Supreme Court Justices, Federal Judges, 10th Circuit Court of Appeal Judges, and have argued countless of cases before appellate courts.

Following a collaborative approach, the firm’s appellate lawyers ensure that before a matter even reaches the appellate phase, they’re already working hand-in-hand with trial teams to persuasively frame and preserve issues for appeal.

By leading the way in numerous practice areas, Hathaway & Kunz not only propel progress within the legal arena; the firm is on the frontline of driving progress for the state of Wyoming itself.

Throughout the years, Hathaway & Kunz has adapted, expanded, and evolved to not only match the growing needs of our diverse client base, but also to ensure the firm is best equipped to create the best outcome for our clients.

Hathaway & Kunz, LLP, was founded in 1975 by Stanley K. Hathaway and Brent R. Kunz—the former, a two-term Wyoming Governor and U.S. Secretary of Interior, and the latter, a Counsel for U.S. Senator Clifford P. Hansen and Special Assistant to Secretary Hathaway in Washington, D.C.

Throughout their careers, both gentlemen worked tirelessly to protect Wyoming’s natural resources and economy. The firm continues to carry on their legacy today, fighting with an unflagging spirit and devotion for Wyoming’s ordinary people and the businesses that support the state’s economic well-being.
